Papercraft Digital Sample Concepts! (Also Happy Valentines Day! ♡ )

I feel like I was confident with going into this project right up until the moment that I actually jumped into getting started.

Which should be a surprise to no one. :)

I thought it would be best to start off simple; work with things that I know are within my skill range before attempting to do anything that will result in me biting off more than I can chew.

Also, after the research that we did, I was still feeling particularly inspired by Hoang Tien Quyet to continue to keep the theme for the majority of my builds somewhat (within the ballpark at least) inspired by things from my childhood.

So I started with this:

Which was loosely inspired by the fact that I like to tumble and collect my own gems from rocks- a hobby I picked up from my Grandpa when I was a kid and stuck into my adult life.

My next build was equally, if not even more so, simple.

I modeled the specific shape to be that of Winnie-the-Pooh (my favourite Disney character) but kept the shapes to a minimum to keep it manageable for myself. Again, I don't identify as Icarus and I don't intend on flying too close to the sun.

After starting to feel a little more comfortable with the overall nature of this project, I moved on to things that were a little more difficult but again, within my comfort range for skill.

Which lead to me struggling for a ridiculously long time trying to make a safety cone.

I originally wanted to make something related to one of the sports I played when I was younger but honestly, a basketball or a hockey puck didn't really feel like they'd pose much of a challenge for me to try and make. So I went with something that I needed to use in both sports during practice- the humble cone.

From there I was inspired to try and make a scoreboard but realized, again, that shape-wise, a scoreboard is not very interesting. So I did a little wordplay until I ended up with the idea of creating a simple clock:

Like a shot clock- geddit? Haha... ha...

I took a few days of a break after this, feeling like I was starting to become uninspired and a little burnt out, to be honest.

When I came back, I immediately did the exact thing I was aiming not to do- do something outside of my comfort zone and frustrate myself.

I thought making a d20 would be easier than it was in practice. I thought it would be a cute little nod to the fact that my dad introduced me to the game when I was 12 and it would be neat to make a larger one out of paper- I was wrong. I flew too close to the sun. I have no idea what happened to the unfolded version or what happened to the mesh but it was a complete trainwreck.

So I made this to represent how I felt following my failure:

Because I was feeling rather poopy. Also, it's a fun inside joke between a friend and me from childhood.

I started to regain my bearings when I decided that for the next one, I would try to get a little more complex again. I mean- it couldn't go as wrong as that d20 did... could it?

It was so much easier. I have no idea why it was so much easier- I feel like this build should have been more difficult but it wasn't? No idea.

But I delved into my Zelda roots, one of the first games that I ever finished on my own without any help from my parents or siblings. That, and I used to be really into pixel art following the DS era of Pokemon games and RPG Maker horror games.

Then finally, feeling decently confident, I got to my final build.

It was something that I wanted to make right from the start but I decided to save it for later on when I would feel more comfortable with Rhino and the nature of this project overall.

The staple of my childhood:

Simple, cute, and easy to execute, I knew that Lego would never fail me. I never had any sets, however, I have a lot of miscellaneous pieces that I would use to make whatever my heart desired (usually spaceships... mostly spaceships... I was a big Star Wars kid, what can I say?).

I debated making other types of bricks but I wasn't sure if that's what the project was technically calling for so I left it at a lone long brick.

Anyways, can't wait to try and make one of these physically!
